Data encoding jobs are some of the more popular occupations that BPOs in the country are offering Filipinos. Simply put, people in data encoding jobs perform tasks that are administrative, the only difference is that they are working for a company that may not even be here in the Philippines. There is also minimal clutter as most of the data to be processed come in digital or compressed formats and are sent via the Internet.  Data encoding jobs are also convenient sources of income as they can either be done in an office setting or in a home-based operation.

Two most prevalent types of data encoding jobs in the Philippines dabble in the fields of medicine and law. Medical transcription has become quite a popular source of revenue for Filipinos as these types of jobs require only a computer, a headset, and impeccable hearing skills. Medical transcriptionists basically encode audio notes of doctors and other medical personnel about medical records. The processed data are then returned to hospitals and medical facilities in the US or other countries for their record and research purposes. Jobs in legal transcription on the other hand employ transcriptionists to encode and format recordings of court hearings, interrogations and testimonies. Legal transcriptionists are tasked not only with transforming audio recordings into readable formats, but to ensure that these are factual and grammatically-correct as these will be used later on as official legal records.

Lack of man-power and time to process the data in their backroom operations have led companies in the US and other parts of the world to look towards Asian countries such as the Philippines for quality processing. Outsourcing has given not only those companies their much-needed workforce for less cost, but has provided  lucrative employment opportunities to Filipinos as well.

How big is the BPO industry in the Philippines and what is its projected growth ?

The saying that a nation’s strength lies in its people rings true.

The Philippines has yet again become one of the leading suppliers of labor worldwide without having to physically export people to other countries largely due to the booming business of BPOs. Call centers, medical transcribing,  website content, and even legal and IT support are just a few of the services that BPO companies in the Philippines dish out to international clients on the look out for quality service at a much cheaper rate.

Currently, a two hundred thousand-strong workforce comprises the BPO industries nationwide, bringing in almost $5 billion into the country’s revenue every year. The Business Processing Association of the Philippines  (BPAP) aims to make the Philippine BPO workforce a million strong by 2010.

Unfortunately, the Philippines is not alone in dominating the BPO industry worldwide. Other countries such as India and China are into the international BPO market as well and their asking prices are way cheaper than those from the Philippines. Clients from abroad however prefer BPO services supplied by the Philippines for our unabashed proficiency in the English language and the sterling quality of intelligence and customer service that we provide. This is an industry that is no longer Manila-centric as more locations are being opened up in key cities around the nation, giving opportunities to Filipinos all over the country to partake in a booming business.

Government support
The Internet has proven to be an advantageous tool in providing Filipinos with employment opportunities, uplifting not only an individual’s financial standing, but also boosting the country’s revenue. In a recent conference on Internet and Computer Technology-based job opportunities held at the SMX Convention Center last February 2008, President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo stressed on the large impact the BPO industry has made in boosting the country’s financial revenue and has proposed further development of the industry by granting a P350 million fund for training applicants. Starting improvement in the academe is also one move suggested by Sen. Francis Pangilinan in a separate statement to further prepare Filipinos for occupations in this burgeoning industry.
