Data encoding jobs are some of the more popular occupations that BPOs in the country are offering Filipinos. Simply put, people in data encoding jobs perform tasks that are administrative, the only difference is that they are working for a company that may not even be here in the Philippines. There is also minimal clutter as most of the data to be processed come in digital or compressed formats and are sent via the Internet.  Data encoding jobs are also convenient sources of income as they can either be done in an office setting or in a home-based operation.

Two most prevalent types of data encoding jobs in the Philippines dabble in the fields of medicine and law. Medical transcription has become quite a popular source of revenue for Filipinos as these types of jobs require only a computer, a headset, and impeccable hearing skills. Medical transcriptionists basically encode audio notes of doctors and other medical personnel about medical records. The processed data are then returned to hospitals and medical facilities in the US or other countries for their record and research purposes. Jobs in legal transcription on the other hand employ transcriptionists to encode and format recordings of court hearings, interrogations and testimonies. Legal transcriptionists are tasked not only with transforming audio recordings into readable formats, but to ensure that these are factual and grammatically-correct as these will be used later on as official legal records.

Lack of man-power and time to process the data in their backroom operations have led companies in the US and other parts of the world to look towards Asian countries such as the Philippines for quality processing. Outsourcing has given not only those companies their much-needed workforce for less cost, but has provided  lucrative employment opportunities to Filipinos as well.

With the influx of data entry jobs in the Philippines comes a sudden rush of opportunities for Filipinos. Data encoders and data entry specialists are among those on top of business process outsourcing (BPO) companies’ wish list, and classified ads. To acquire and be successful in these kinds of job, typing speed, alongside accuracy, is the ultimate key. Extremely important in these kinds of job, it is essential that you improve your typing speed as dramatically as possible. Here’s how:

1.  Target a typing speed rate. Assess your typing speed by taking online typing speed tests. They will  tell you your typing speed rate and accuracy. Take these tests once in a while to see near you are towards attaining your typing speed goal. Always strive to get a better evaluation than your last try.
2.  Learn touch typing. Touch typing is typing technique wherein the fingers sort of “memorize” the position of the keys on the keyboard. Develop this skill by constant practice, gradually minimize looking at your keyboard. Touch typing is important in improving your typing speed because it allows you to type and read at the same time.
3.  Practice. Nothing beats constant and continual practice in improving your typing speed. Chat, play typing games, and take online typing tests.
4.  Mind your comfort. Discomfort hinders improvement in typing speed. Adjust your monitor in a way that would be most comfortable for your eyes. Use keyboards with which you are most comfortable. Sit on a comfortable chair and get a comfortable position while typing, but still be very mindful of your body posture.
5.  Mind your health. Too much work can cause repetitive strain injury (RSI). It is a work-related injury caused by overuse of muscles and joints,  particularly on the upper limbs, back, neck. Typists are very prone to this injury.

Since you are aiming to improve your typing speed, it is very important that you take good care of your fingers. Here are a few tips:

Before a long and heavy typing session: Warm up. Flex your fingers and give them a little exercise in preparation for the work ahead.

While working: Allow your fingers to rest once in a while. Shake and flex them. Finger exercises help avoid strains.

After typing: Cool down. Stretch, shake and flex your fingers to shake away the strain of continuous typing.

Becoming a data encoder or data entry specialist, in essence, is becoming a master of typing speed and accuracy. Those two skills are essential keys in opening doors to data entry jobs in the Philippines, and other opportunities. However, there aren’t too many schools offering courses concentrated on developing those skills. Even if there were, why spend when you can improve your typing speed and accuracy on your own?
